Traditional Postpartum Care

For the vast majority of human history and throughout nearly every culture, postpartum was recognized as a sacred period that was to be marked with rest, support, nourishment, and ritual. It was a time that mothers and birthing people were expected to heal and be cared for, just as we cared for our newborns.

There was (and still is in many cultures) an understanding that our bodies are open, our minds have quite literally been altered, and our hearts are vulnerable. Our entire body, mind and soul requires intentional healing.

In modern American society, we have forgotten what this care looks like.

As a traditional postpartum birth worker my focus is on you and your healing.

Creating your postpartum plan

Before I begin caring for you we will create a postpartum plan and discuss the following; your support system, foods you prefer, fears surrounding postpartum, new dynamics between you and your partner (if one is involved), infant feeding plan, postpartum recovery supply recommendations, modalities of healing I offer, we may talk about the taboo or overlooked topics of postpartum, I may give you and your partner resources to better understand how postpartum impacts our minds and bodies, and any other topics you may want to explore.
